The Candid Frame #19 - Joel Meyerowitz

Joel Meyerowitz is an award-winning photographer whose work has appeared in over 350 exhibitions in museums and galleries around the world. He was born in New York in 1938. He began photographing in 1962. He is a “street photographer” in the tradition of Henri Cartier-Bresson and Robert Frank, although he works exclusively in color. You can find out more about Joel and his work by visiting his website.

The only photographer who was granted unimpeded access to Ground Zero after September 13, 2001, Meyerowitz takes a meditative stance toward the work and workers there, systematically documenting the painful work of rescue, recovery, demolition and excavation.

Joel Meyerowitz recommends the works of Timothy O'Sullivan and William H. Jackson. He also suggests you check out a website dedicated to street photography called In-Public.

I read about this guy in one of the big photography magazines. I am going to have to look back and pull out the article I read on him.

I loved this interview. Mr. Meyerowitz was so down to Earth and had an awesome sense of meaning. I like how he pushed aside glorifying things beyond what they really are and focused on what is true. Definitely one of my favorite shows so far!

You did a great job with the Meyerowitz interview. One particular element I enjoyed was the environment you used for the interview. I don't know if it was done purposely or not, but the sounds provided a nice background for what Joel actually is... a street photographer :)

I had the pleasure of meeting Joel when he opened his Aftermath exhibit at my local art museum. I met with him the afternoon of the reception and shot this photo of him in front of one of his pieces:

Keep up the good work... I'm enjoying The Candid Frame quite a bit :)

One of the best interviews I've heard in any venue. I learned so much. Thanks for putting this series together!

Excellent! I've always loved Meyerowitz's work in all of its facets and I've also always found him to be a passionate and articulate speaker about photography and its impact on the world (and on his life). I loved his candid assessment of some of the contemporary photographic work that falls under the "conceptual" banner...

A really nice interview. Thanks.
